Historical Description

WHISTON is a parish and large village, in the Southern division of the Riding, Rotherham union and county court district, south division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, rural deanery of Rotherham, archdeaconry and diocese of York, 6 ½ miles east from Sheffield, 2 south from Rotherham and 174 from London, pleasantly situated in a valley, through which runs a small stream flowing into the Rother. The parish includes the small hamlets of Canklow, Guilthwaite, Upper Whiston, Morthen, Herringthorpe, Broom and Moohgate, Part of the township of Whiston is in the parish of Rotherham. The church of St. Mary Magdalene, originally a Norman church of the 11th century, and added to during the 15th century, consists of chancel, nave & aisles, and a square tower containing 3 bells of ancient date; the Norman arches and pillars have been removed during the last 150 years and galleries erected. The register dates from the year 1594, and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £868, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Effingham and held by the Rev. the Hon. William Howard M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, Prebendary of York and rural dean. A Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1824 and enlarged in 1866. Mansell’s and Hammond’s charities amount to £5 4s. yearly for distribution. The lord of the manor is Sir George Reresby Sitwell bart. who is also the principal landowner. The soil is red sandstone; subsoil red gritstone. There are three quarries here. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,948 acres, with 240 acres of wood; rateable value £8,863; and the population (1871), 1,317.

Moorgate and Moorgate Grove adjoin the south suburb of Rotherham and contain several villa residences. Oakwood House, the seal of James Yates esq. D.L. is a stone building in the Italian style, standing on an eminence, with delightful views of the surrounding country; the pleasure grounds, tastefully laid out, contain a spacious conservatory and vineries.

Canklow is 1 ½ miles west on the Rother.
