Historical Description

WHITEWELL is an ecclesiastical parish, formed from that part of the parish of Whalley which is situate in the West Riding, viz.: the township of Bowland Forest, Lower Division, and Browsholme, formerly reputed extra parochial, 8 ½ miles north-west from Clitheroe and 18 southwest from Settle, in the Northern division of the Riding, Staincliff and Ewcross wapentake, Clitheroe union and county court district Whalley rural deanery, Manchester diocese and province of York. Half of this parish and the remainder of the parish of Whalley are in the county palatine of Lancaster: the river Hodder here separates the West Riding from Lancashire. The church was formerly appendent to “St. Michael 8 in castro,” the chapel within the precincts of Clitheroe Castle and was in ancient times a“Field Chapel,”for the use of travellers on their journey to Lancaster: the present structure, erected in 1818, is a plain square stone building, with a turret and 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1710. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £146, in the gift of the Hulme trustees and held by the Rev. Richard Anderton. The Whitewell Hotel is a well known and favourite resort for anglers, the river Hodder which flows through the valley affording good fishing. The scenery is considered very attractive, presenting on a miniature scale, somewhat the features of a Swiss valley. Browsholme Hall, the seat of Capt. Edward Parker J.P. is an ancient stone mansion, standing in a well-wooded park of small extent. The trustees of Colonel Towneley are lords of the forest of Bowland and chief landowners. The soil is limestone; subsoil, grit and clay. The chief crops are hay and pasture. Cheese of an excellent quality is made here. The area is 9,130 acres; rateable value, £4,553; the population in 1871 was 580.
