Historical Description

WHITGIFT is a large township and parish comprising; the townships of Reedness, Ousefleet, and Swinefleet, the latter being now an ecclesiastical parish; it is 6 miles east from Goole, and is a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, in the lower division of Osgoldcross wapentake, Goole union and county court district, rural deanery of Snaith. and archdeaconry and diocese of York, situate on the south bank of the Ouse. The church of St. Mary Magdalen is an old building in the Early English style, erected in 1304, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and a tower with 3 bells. The register dates from the year 1562, but is imperfect between the years 1648 and 1674, being otherwise in a very fair condition. The living is a vicarage, the yearly value about £310, varying according to the rental of land from which it is principally derived, and is in the gift of G. W. Bateson de Yarburgh esq. and held by the Rev. William Williams. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, A fair is held here on the 22nd and 23rd of July and & statute fair for hiring servants is held at Martinmas. Several small doles are distributed here in bread and clothing on the first Sunday after each quarter-day, provided by the proceeds of land bequeathed for the purpose, and 20s. each is given annually to the clerk and sexton on St. Thomas’ day. Whifgift Hall, the ancient manor house, the property of and occupied by T. Bladworth esq. is a handsome brick building in the Elizabethan style, and stands on the banks of the Ouse, in a well-wooded park of 300 acres. Thomas Bladworth esq. who is lord of the manor, and Mrs. Bell and R. C. Empson esq. J.P. are the principal landowners. The oil is a rich warp; the subsoil clay and peat. The chief crops are potatoes, wheat and flax. The area is 1,501 acres; rateable value, £2,372; population in 1871, 326. The area of entire parish is 9,941 acres: population, 2,436.

The Endowed school has a yearly income of £50, arising from the endowment & gives a free education to 10 children; Samuel Hoggard, master.
