Reedness History

Reedness is a township and village, 2 miles in length on the south bank of the river Ouse, in the parish of Whitgift, about 5 miles east from Goole. Here is an endowment of £30 for the education of 12 children of the township, and £5 is given annually to the poor on St. Thomas’ day. The Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here. T. Bladworth esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Mr. William Ireland, the Rev. Edward Egremont and John Egremont esq. The soil is mostly a rich warp; the subsoil is peat and clay. The chief crops are potatoes, wheat and flax. The area is 3,083 acres, of which 174 are water; rateable value, £4,945; population in 1871, 576.
