Historical Description

In Whitkirk church, about a mile from Temple Newsome, are several ancient monuments, and an elegant one to the memory of Mr. Smeaton, the engineer who erected the Edystone lighthouse.

WHITKIRK is a parish and village half-a-mile from Crossgates station on the Leeds and Selby branch of the North Eastern railway, 4 miles east from Leeds on the road to Selby, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Skyrack wapentake, Leeds county court district, Hunslet. Leeds and Tadcaster unions, Whitkirk rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry, and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Mary, a building in the Perpendicular style, was entirely restored and re-pewed in 1856; and consists of chancel, nave and aisles, and has 3 bells, re-cast in 1803 to replace some of arger size and more ancient date;, the eastern window was given by Major Waud: the pulpit is a handsome work in Caen stone, and the brass eagle lectern, a very handsome work of art, was presented in memory of Joshua Wilkinson esq. by his widow: there is an ancient alabaster monument with two recumbent figures, representing Sir Robert Scargill and his lady, former occupiers of Thorpe Hall; a magnificent and elaborately carved monument to Edward Ingram, Viscount Irwin, erected by his wife about the end of the 17th century, with another to Charles, the last Viscount Irwin, and Frances his wife, erected at the beginning of the present century by their daughter, the Marchioness of Hertford: on the north wall of the chancel is a mural tablet to John Smeaton F.R.S, the founder of the Eddystone lighthouse, who was born at Austhorpe Lodge in 1724 and buried here in 1792: there are also several memorials of the Ingrams, consisting of an altar tomb to Sir Arthur Ingram, knight, dated 1655; a fine alabaster monument, erected by the Hon. Mrs. Meynell-Ingram in memory of her husband, Hugo Francis Meynell-Ingram, who died in 1871, as well as to other members of the Ingram family; it consists of 3 trefoil-headed niches in the Early English style, in each of which is a brass tablet with inscriptions in mediaeval letters. The registers date from the year 1603 and fire in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £250, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. George Moreton Platt M.A. of that college, formerly Bell’s University scholar. There are Wesleyan chapels at Halton and Colton. The charities are about £100 yearly. The principal landowner is the Hon. Mrs. Meynell-Ingram of Temple Newsam. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are potatoes and grass. The entire area of the parish is 5,638 acres; and the population of the entire parish in 1871 was 3,187; the area of the ecclesiastical parish 3,551, population 1,886.
