Historical Description

WHIXLEY is a parish, township and village, 1 ½ miles from the Cuttal station, 6 miles south-east from Boroughbridge, and 7 east from Knaresborough, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Claro, union of Great Ouseburn, county court district of Knaresboruugh, rural deanery of Boroughbridge, archdeaconry of Richmond, diocese of Ripon and province of York. The parish consists of the townships of Whixlet, Green Hammerton, and Old Thornville. The church of the Ascension is an ancient stone structure in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a square tower, containing a clock placed in memory of the late Prince Consort, and 6 bells, three of which are dated 1667, and the others 1861: there is also an ancient font and five brasses, respectively inscribed to Archibald Swayne-Price (1871), John Cecil Valentine Price (1862), Emily Valentine Price (1875), the Rev. William Dalla (1818). and the Rev. William Armstrong (1858), former vicars of Whixley. The register dates from the year 1568, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £160 with residence, in the gift of the trustees of C. G. H. Massingberd-Mundy esq. and held by the Rev. William Valentine M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. The Wesleyans have a small place of worship here. Near the church is a large building called the Hospital, the ancient residence of the Tancred family, and now disused; it was founded A.D. 1754, for twelve decayed gentlemen, by C. Tancred esq. who appointed by will the following to be the governors and trustees of this and other his charities:-The Masters of Christ’s and Caius Colleges, Cambridge; the Master of the Charterhouse; the Governors of Greenwich and Chelsea Hospitals; the Treasurer of Lincoln’s Inn, and the President of the College of Physicians. The other charities amount to about £40 annually. The Governors of Tancred’s Charity are the lords of the manor and principal landowners. The Boil is loamy; the subsoil is red sand. The crops are principally turnips, barley, seeds and wheat. The area of the township is 2,374 acres; of entire parish 4,083 acres; rateable value, £4,713 14s. 9d.; the population in 1871 of the township was 46, of the entire parish, 872.
