Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WILBERFOSS is a parish, township and pleasant village on the York and Hull road, and on a small rivulet, 1 ½ miles south from Fangfoss station on the York and Market Weighton branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 north-west-by-west from Pocklington and 8 east from York, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Wilton Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, Wilton Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient edifice of brick and stone, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells: on the floor of the south side is an ancient brass, with effigies of Sir Robert Hoton kt. and his lady, who died about the middle of the 15th century: the church was restored in 1868-9, and has 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1618. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £84, including 22 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Leconfield and other trustees, and held since 1907 by the Rev. George Casswell Holmes, of Durham University, who is also vicar of and resides at Kexby. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1841, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1824. The parishioners have a yearly rent-charge of 10s. left by William Clark out of land in Newrton. The poor of Wilberfoss township have 3s. 4d. from Wood's charity. A rivulet crosses the village, and near it was anciently a Benedictine nunnery, founded by Helias de Catton, before the year 1153, and which, at the Dissolution, had a prioress and twelve nuns, with a yearly income of £28 8s. 8d.: the building included a church, the choir containing 16 stalls and three altars; the parish church adjoined that of the priory at its western end; there was a cloister on the north side 60 feet square, the alleys being 6 feet wide, but unglazed, and on the east the chapter house, 26 feet long and 16 broad, with dorter over; on the north and west the hall and various other chambers and offices: the site was granted to George Gale, in 1554, and no remains now exist. The Manor house is an ancient building on the north side of the churchyard, now occupied as a farmhouse. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor. The soil is chiefly a light sandy loam; subsoil, sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, beans, turnips, potatoes, carrots and seeds. The area of the township is 1,472 acres; rateable value, £2,195; the population in 1911 was 341 in the township and 545 in the parish.
