Historical Description

WINESTEAD is a parish, township and pleasant village, 1 ¼ miles north-west from Patrington station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 ½ south-east from Hedon and 13 ½ east from Hull, in the Holderness division of the Riding, south division of the wapentake of Holderness, South Holderness petty sessional division, Patrington union, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. German is an ancient structure of rough cobbles and brick in the Transitional style, with additions and alterations at later periods, consisting of chancel, with aisle and chapel on the south side, and nave, with porch, but has no tower: in the nave is an altar tomb, with fine recumbent effigy to Sir Christopher Hildyard kt. ob. 1602, and another effigy of an ecclesiastic of the 15th century: in the chancel is a brass with the upper portions of effigies of a knight and lady, six daughters (one headless) and seven sons, the eldest being in armour, supposed to represent Sir Christopher Hildyard kt. ob. 1538, his second wife, Joan, and family; the male figure was discovered in 1899 to be palimpsest, exhibiting portions of a Flemish brass, c. 1360, representing the left shoulder and arm of a civilian, wearing a mantle, and figured in the Yorks. Arch. Jl. xvi. 239, and there is another to William Retherby, rector and re-builder of the church, ob. 1417: the font, for some time abandoned to base uses, has been recovered and replaced: the church was restored in 1889-90, and the south aisle (removed, it is believed, in the 17th century) rebuilt, at a cost of £2,400: there are 134 sittings. The register dates from the year 1578, and contains an entry of the birth, in 1621, of Andrew Marvell and of the induction of his father to the rectory The living is a rectory, net yearly value £150, including 237 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of T. B. T. Hildyard esq. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Norman James Miller M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and rural dean of Hedon. There is a charity here called “The Town Stock,” producing 19s. yearly. Winestead Hall, the property of Harold James Reckitt esq. of Littlegreen, Petersfield, Hants, and occupied by Boswell George Jalland esq. J.P. is a fine mansion of red brick, one mile north from the village, and stands in the midst of beautiful pleasure grounds. Harold James Reckitt esq. and Walter Samuel Bailey esq. of 15 Brunswick terrace, Brighton, are the chief landowners. The soil is fertile, partly clay and partly light soil; subsoil, strong clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, peas, oats and barley. The area is 2,106 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value. £1,942; the population in 1911 was 188.
