Historical Description

WISTOW is a parish and village, 3 miles north from Selby railway station, 8 ½ south-east from Tadcaster and 12 south from York, in the Eastern division of the Riding, Selby union and county court district, Lower division of Barkston Ash, Selby rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of York, bounded on the north-east by the river Ouse. The church of All saints is an ancient structure, consisting of chancel, nave and tower containing 3 bells: the nave and aisles of this church are of the 13th century: the chancel is Decorated Gothic of the 14th century: the clerestory and the excellent tower, in the Perpendicular style, being added at a later date: it contains several tablets in memory of the ancient Saxon families of Hawksworth and Wynn, and four stained windows, two of which were erected at the expense of the late Mr. William Clayton, of Barlby. Bank, Selby; one in memory of James Backhouse esq. at the cost of his son, and one in the chancel to the memory of Mr. Thomas Appleyard, of Wistow Lordship. The earliest date of the register is January 28, 1590; many of the earliest registers are in loose sheets, somewhat decayed, but have been carefully copied; the rest are in excellent preservation. The living is a discharged Vicarage, yearly value £370 with 250 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and held by the Rev. Henry Greeves, of St. Bees, surrogate of he diocese of York; an excellent vicarage house has been erected, the principal contributors to which were the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. The charities are of about £70 yearly value. Bishop wood, to the west (part of which is in Cawood parish), is supposed to be the largest wood in Yorkshire, comprising about 999 acres and belonging to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the lords of the manor. The principal landowners are the Prest family, William sparling esq. the vicar of Wistow and Mr. Liversidge. The soil is chiefly light and loamy. The chief crops are wheat and potatoes. The area is 4,316 acres; rateable value £6,181; and the population in 1871 was 817.

The school, erected in 1876, is partly supported & governed by the trustees of Archbishop Mountaigne’s charity & is under Government inspection; Walter Sunderland Taylor, master; Mrs. Annie Mary Taylor, mistress.
