Historical Description

WITHERNWICK is a township, parish and village, with a station called Whitedale, 1 ½ miles west from the village, on the Hull and Hornsea branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 5 ½ south from Hornsea and 12 north-east from Hull, in the Holderness division of the Rading, north division of the wapentake of Holderness, North Holderness petty sessional division, Skirlaugh union, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hornsea, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Alban is a building of cobble stone and brick in the Gothic style, with cut stone dressings, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a turret over the chancel arch, containing 2 bells: in 1906 a new organ was provided at a cost of £300, chiefly subscribed by Andrew Carnegie esq., LL.D. of Skibo Castle, N.B.: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1652. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £186, including £82 yearly from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, with 06 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1907 by the Rev. Edward Ernest Eaton. There is a Wesleyan chapel, seating 100, with Sunday schools, built in 1845, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1843, with 120 sittings. There are charities of £8 2s. yearly value. The Foresters’ Hall, 2 neat building of red brick, was erected in 1890, and will hold about 200 persons; it is let for public meetings and lectures. W. Bethell esq. of Rise Park, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, marl clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, turnips, beans, seeds and barley. The area is 2,861 acres; rateable value, £3,559; the population in 1911 was 416.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1846, as a National school, & enlarged in 1911; it will hold 120 children; average attendance, 88.
