Historical Description

WOMERSLEY is a parish, township, village and station on a branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, and in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of Osgoldcross wapentake, county court district of Pontefract, rural deanery of Pontefract, and archdeaconry and diocese of York; it comprises the townships of Womerblby, Cridling Stubbs, Little Smeaton and Walden Stubbs, the two first being in the union of Pontefract and the others in that of Hemsworth. Womersley is 6 miles east-south-east from Pontefract,10 north-west from Doncaster, 167 from London, 20 from Leeds, 30 from Bradford, 15 ½ from Wakefield and 24 ½ from York. The church of St. Martin is a stone building, principally Early English, with some traces of Norman work, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and tower with spire, 3 bells and clock. The church was almost entirely restored at the expense of Edward, fourth Baron Hawke, in the year 1868; during which restoration a stone coffin lid was found buried beneath the floor bearing the figure of a crusader with the arms of the De Lacy family, the supposed founders of the church, since the same coat is repeated in various parts of the building; an ancient crucifix of peculiar workmanship was found, which is now in the possession of Frances Lady Hawke: a stained east window was at the same time inserted by stanhope, afterwards fifth lord, to the memory of his brother, Martin: an organ being also provided by the subscriptions of parishioners and others; there are five monuments of the Hawke family, dated respectively 1720, 1745, 1794, 1824 and 1870. The register dates from the year 1665, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £290, from land allotted in lieu of tithe at the enclosure in 1787, in the gift of Frances Lady Hawke, and held by the Rev. Joseph Henry Brierley M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. There is a reading room supported by Lady Hawke. Woodhall, 1 mile north from the village and once belonging to the Vavasour family, was anciently surrounded by a moat; it is now a farmhouse, occupied by Mr. Robert Lickley. Womersley Hall, a noble edifice, standing in a well-wooded park, is the residence of Frances Lady Hawke, who is lady of the manor and owns all the land, excepting the glebe and 31 acres belonging to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company. The soil consists of clay, marl, sand and limestone; of the last there are several quarries. The crops are wheat, oats, barley, potatoes and turnips.

The population in 1871 was 460, and the area 3,850 acres; rateable value, £4,514. The area of the entire parish is 7,013 acres, and the population in 1871 was 1,070.
