Historical Description

Worsborough is a pleasant village situated in a beautiful dale, called Worsborough Dale, abounding with coal, ironstone, and timber, and streams of water. It has a church or chapel of ease to the parish of Darfield, founded by Sir Robert Rochley, in the reign of Henry III. Also a lectureship, and free grammar school.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WORSBOROUGH is a township, station on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway and ecclesiastical parish formed from the parish of Darfield, 5 miles south-west from Darfield, 9 north-west from Rotherham and 3 from Barnsley, in the Southern division of the Riding, wapentake of Staincross, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Barnsley, rural deanery of Wath and archdeaconry and diocese of York: it is situated on the Barnsley and Sheffield turnpike road and on a branch of the Dearne and Dove canal. The parish is governed by a Local Board of Health of 9 members. The church of St. Mary, supposed to have been erected in the time of Henry III. is a stone building in the Later English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a square tower and spire with 3 bells; it was restored in 1864, and contains an organ, seven stained windows and font, dated 1662: two of the bells are dated respectively 1797 and 1800, the third, which is much older, has the following inscription: “God save this church, Amen: Jarvis Rockley;” and since this Jarvis Rockley was born in 1560 and died in 1604, this would no doubt be about the date of the bell: there are a large number of ancient monuments and brasses, amongst which may be noticed brasses to Thomas Edmunds, secretary to Lord Strafford, and Anna his wife (1662); and a heart-shaped brass to Mary, wife of Thomas Edmunds esq. gent, and daughter of John, son of George Wentworth. of Bretton Hall, esq. (1678), together with many others to this family: there are also a number of memorials to the family of Elmhirst, including a brass to Thomas, son of Richard Elmhirst, by Margaret, his wife, daughter of Richard Micklethwaite, with this anagram upon his name:-“Lo earth misseth me, 1632:” there are several other tablets and brasses to this family from 1683 to dates in the present century: between the chancel and south aisle is a most curious monument, erected to Roger Rockley knt. Son of Thomas Rockley knt. and entirely of carved oak; it has two ledges one above the other, supported by four columns one at each corner; on the upper one lies the figure, in oak, of a young man clad in armour, with sword by his side, and his visor open, the hands being joined: on the lower ledge is a skeleton, also carved in oak: fine linen has been affixed to both effigies, which gives the lower one somewhat the appearance of a wax figure; the upper one has been colored or painted: the inscription is now gone, but the date is about the middle of the 16th century: on a plain stone is a memorial to Gervase Rockley esq. (1604): there are many other tablets and brasses in the church, bearing dates from 1683 to the present century. The first register book dates from 1556 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150 with residence, in the gift of the rector of Darfield and held by the Rev. John Newman M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. Worsborough Dale is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1861 from the parish of Darfield. St. Thomas’ church, erected in 1859, at a cost of £3,500, was built by subscription, to which F. W. T. Vernon Wentworth esq. contributed £2,000, and also gave £1,000 towards its endowment; it is in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower with spire and 1 bell; the east and west windows are stained, the former was erected to the memory of Mrs. Martha Jepson, and the latter by the family of the lady of the manor: a font has been presented by S. J, Cooper esq. who has also given a very handsome pulpit in memory of his father and mother, both of Caen stone: the pulpit has five panels, between each of which is a figure of one of the Evangelists. The register dates from the year 1859. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £130, in the patronage of the Crown and Archbishop of York alternately, and held by the Rev. William Banham B.A. of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Worsborough Dale and Common are in St. Thomas’ parish, which contained a population in 1871 of about 3,000. St. Luke’s, Worsborough Common, is a chapel of ease to St. Thomas’, erected 1874, at a cost of £1,673, by public subscription, the land being given by F. W. T. Vernon Wentworth esq.; it is in the later English style, and consists of chancel, nave, bell turret, with 1 bell and an organ; there is a memorial window to the Cooper family; the Rev. John Mason M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, is curate. The Wesleyans, New Connexion Methodists and Congregationalists have chapels, and there are several small charities for the benefit of the poor. In Worsborough Dale, on the northeast side of the village, are several extensive collieries, gunpowder mills, corn mills and iron works. Worsborough Hall is now in the occupation of the Barrow Haematite steel Co.; there is a curious and valuable cabinet here, which belonged to Charles I., the stool on which he knelt when he was beheaded, and a pair of sheets used by him the night previous to his execution. Ouslethwaite is the seat of Miss Elmhirst, Darley Hall of Mrs. Mann. John Jeffcock esq. is lord of the manor of Darley, and F. W. T. Vernon Wentworth esq. of the manor of Worsborough: Mr. Wentworth. the Rev. William Elmhirst, William Henry Martin Edmunds esq. and John Jeffcock esq. are chief landowners. The soil is varied; subsoil, in the valley, clay, and on the hill, sandstone and rock. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, oats, turnips and potatoes. The area is 3,779 acres; rateable value, £32,204; and the population in 1861 was 5,381 and in 1871, 6,030. The area of the ecclesiastical parish of St. Mary is 2,531 acres.
