Historical Description

WORTLEY (near Sheffield) is a township, pretty village, and ecclesiastical parish formed from the parish of Tankersley, pleasantly situated on a lofty eminence, in the Southern division of the Riding, Staincross wapentake, Barnsley petty sessional division, Barnsley county court district, rural deanery of Ecclesfield, archdeaconry and diocese of York, and has a station on the Manchester, Shelfield, and Lincolnshire railway. Wortley gives its name to the union, and is distant 3 miles west from Tankersley, 5 south-east from Penistone, 171 from London, 7 from Barnsley, 18 from Huddersfield, 8 ½ from Sheffield, and is separated on the west from Hunshelf (a hamlet of Penistone), by the river Don. The church of St. Leonard, probably founded as early as the reign of Henry III. has very little of the ancient stone structure remaining, the east window being the only remaining part of an older church; it is now chiefly in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and square embattled tower containing 1 bell: the sittings are all free: there are several stained windows, and a fine monument by Flaxman. The register dates from the year 1662, and is in fair condition. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £120, with 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Wharncliffe, and held by the Rev. Sydney Greenwood M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. A parsonage has been recently (1880) built near the church. There are charities amounting to £35, distributed annually among the poor, and principally derived from an estate of 16 acres, at Finkle street near Wortley, left by the Countess of Devonshire. Here are collieries, iron and steel works, brick and the works, and stone quarries. The working of iron in this locality claims a high, antiquity, and is believed to date from the period of the Roman occupation, large quantities of scoria having been found in the adjacent woods. An inscription in Wortley churchyard to Francis Askew, hammerman, who died October 24, 1609, is, at least, an evidence of its existence for more than two centuries: shortly after which, in 1713, the Wortley iron works were enlarged and improved, further extensions taking place in 1825, 1855 and 1868; they are now under the management of Messrs. Thomas Andrews & Co., and enjoy a wide and deserved reputation. Wortley Hall, the seat of the Earl of Wharncliffe, is a handsome stone mansion in the Italian style, delightfully situated in a picturesque park adjoining the village, adorned with numerous and extensive plantations, and commanding rich and varied prospects. On the south is Wharncliffe Chase, covering an area of 2,000 acres, the oldest and most extensive in the West Riding, extending to within four or five miles of Sheffield, through which are some beautiful walks, forming a favourite resort of the inhabitants of Sheffield for pic-nic parties which are permitted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Earl of Wharncliffe is lord of the manor and owner of nearly all the land. The soil is principally clay, but is rich in coal, iron, and gritstone. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 5,616 acres; rateable value, £15,559; and the population 1861 was 1,121, and (1871), 1,054.

Places here are Finkle street and Smithy Fold. At Stanfield Ash is a quarry.

Wortley Union

Wortley union comprises the following places:-Bradfield, Ecclesfield, Tankersley and Wortley; gross estimated rental £166,666; rateable value, £137,882 Board day, Friday (fortnightly).

National school (mixed), a stone building, erected in 1861, & still supported by Lord Wharncliffe. The schoolroom is used for a Sunday school, & has a library attached, containing 550 volumes for the free use of the parishioners, & 270 volumes for children. Joseph T. Towler, master; Miss Anne Kaye, mistress.
