Historical Description

WRAGBY is a parish containing the townships of West Hardwick, Hessle, Hill Top, Ryhill, Wintersett and Foulby including Huntwick and Nostell, in Hemsworth union and county court district, and rural deanery of Pontefract, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The townships of Hessle, Hill Top, Foulby, including Huntwick and Nostell, and West Hardwick are all in Upper Osgoldcross wapentake, Eastern division of the Riding; those of Ryhill and Wintersett are in Staincross wapentake, Southern division of the Riding and in Barnsley county court district. The village of Wragby, except a small portion in Wintersett, is situated in the three first-named townships, and is on the London and Doncaster road, 5 miles south-east from Wakefield, 5 south-west from Pontefract, one mile from the Nostell station on the Great Northern railway, 3 ½ miles south-east from Oakenshaw goods station on the North Midland line, 2 ½ miles from Ackworth station on the Midland and North Eastern line and 176 from London. The church of St. Michael and Our Lady stands in Nostell Park and is a handsome structure in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower with 6 bells, dated 1830: there are fourteen richly-stained windows, and some fine examples of wood carving: there are several monuments of the Winn family, among which may be noticed one executed by Flaxman, in 1809, to Sir Rowland Winn, fourth hart, who died in 1765, and another by Chantrey to John Winn esq. (1817): the west tower arch was opened in 1860; stalls for the use of the minister and choir have been placed in the chancel: the font of this church possesses an especial interest from the fact of its basin having once formed part of the font belonging to the church of Auburn, near Bridlington, in the East Riding, the site of which is now some distance out at sea; this font was removed from the church before the cliff on which it stood was washed down by the sea, and afterwards given to the late C. Winn esq. by the late Sir W. Strickland bart. of Boynton, on whose estate the church of Auburn was situated. The register dates from the year 1538, and is partially decayed, but is in careful preservation. The living is a donative, in the gift of Rowland Winn M.P. and held by the Rev. Henry Cumberland Stuart M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Twenty widows of the parish have an annuity of £20, left by Mrs. Sarah Winn in 1765, and there are also several smaller charities. On the north-west side of the village is Nostell Priory, the mansion of Rowland Winn esq. M.P. Standing on a rising ground in a park of 250 acres, well-wooded and stocked with deer, which was anciently the demesne of an extensive and richly-endowed priory, founded in 1121 by Ralph Adlove, chaplain to Henry I. for canons regular of the order of St. Augustine, in a wood granted to the monks by Robert de Laci, lord of the manor of Pontefract; this monastery, dedicated to St. Oswald, was erected on the spot where a few hermits had previously built a little hall and an oratory: this estate was subsequently purchased by George Winn esq. created a baronet in 1660: on the death of Sir Rowland Winn, in 1805, the baronetcy devolved upon his cousin, Edmund Mark Winn esq. who then resided at Ackton, but the family estates passed to his nephew, John Williamson esq. who on coming of age took the name and arms of Winn, and in 1817 was succeeded by Charles Winn esq.: the mansion was built by Sir Rowland Winn in the beginning of the last century, near the site of the old priory; the east side is approached by an avenue of fine elms one mile long, and on the west side is a sheet of water of 60 acres. Rowland Winn esq. M.P. is lord of the manor and impropriator, and owns nearly all the land. The soil in these various townships is chiefly of a loamy nature; the subsoil is clayey and loamy. The principal crops are wheat, oats and barley, potatoes and grass. The area of the parish of Wragby is 4,387 acres; and the population in 1871 was 689.

The National school (mixed) Wragby, is endowed with £6 5s. yearly from the revenues of the Duchy of Lancaster; John Moss, master; Miss Barlow, mistress.
