Historical Description

WYCLIFFE is a township and parish, on the river Tees, which here separates the county from Durham, 4 ½ miles from Winston station, in the county of Durham, on the Barnard Castle and south Durham section of the North Eastern railway, 5 south-east from Barnard Castle, 14 west from Darlington and 11 north-west from Richmond, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake of Gilling West, petty sessional division of Greta Bridge, county court district of Barnard Castle, Teesdale union, rural deanery of North Richmond, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. the church of St. Mary, situated in a picturesque dell close to the river Tees, is an ancient building of stone, nearly covered with ivy, in the Gothic style, and consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a small belfry containing 2 bells: within the communion rails are several brasses with Latin inscriptions to members of the Wycliffe family, dated 1557, 1584, 1606 and 1611, and including one to Boger de Wyclif, lord of the manor, and Katherine his wife, of the 15th century, and another to Ralph, only son of William Wickliffe, with kneeling effigy, ob. 1606: a font of fossil limestone, from a design by Mr. Hicks, architect, of Newcastle, was presented sept. 28, 1900, by Mrs. Armstrong, of the Elms, Gosforth, as a memorial to her husband, George Armstrong esq. d. July, 1898. The church affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1681. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £310, including 6 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Mrs. Armstrong, and held since 1911 by the Rev. George Thomas Shettle L.A. of St. Andrews University. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Mary and erected in 1848—9, is a building of stone in the Gothic style: the stained east window was the gift of five donors: the altar is of stone, ornamented with gilding, and near it is a statue of the Virgin Mary, carved in oak: there are 250 sittings. Connected with the church is a day school for boys and girls. There are charities amounting to about £1 9s. yearly. Wycliffe Hall, the property of Major Walter George Raleigh Chichester-Constable, of Burton Constable, and now (1913) unoccupied, is a mansion of stone, near the church and the river Tees; it stands in a beautiful park, bounded by woodland, and has grounds tastefully laid out. Major W. G. R. Chichester-Constable is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loamy; subsoil, limestone, rubble, clay and gravel. The chief crops are barley, wheat, oats and roots. The area of Wycliffe with Thorpe is 2,491 acres of land and 32 of water; rateable value, £3,212; the population in 1911 was 181 and of the ecclesiastical parish 306.

The children of this parish attend the schools at Whorlton, Winston & Coldwell.
