Historical Description

WYKEHAM with RUSTON is a civil parish and village, on the road from Scarborough to Pickering, with a station, called Wykeham, on the Pickering and Seamer branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 miles south-west from Scarborough, 11 east from Pickering and 15 south-east from Malton, in the Whitby division of the Riding, in the wapentake of Pickering Lythe, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe East, and union and county court district of Scarborough, rural deanery of Malton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of All Saints, erected in 1853, to the north of the village, is a building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and south porch; the detached tower, a structure of the Decorated period, probably belonged to the ancient chapel of St. Helen, erected in 1321, by John de Wycham, and served from the priory; it remained for some time in ruins, but in 1855 was restored, and a spire added from designs by Mr. W. Butterfield, architect; there are 5 bells and clock; the bast window is stained: and there are sittings for 500 persons. The ancient parish church stood beside the abbey, but was taken down in 1853 on the erection of the present church. A tall, handsome stone cross now marks the site of the altar of the old church. The organ was restored in 1911 in memory of Cecilia Viscountess Downe, d. May 26th, 1910. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of Viscount Downe K.C.V.O., C.B., C.I.E. and held since 1909 by the Rev. Arthur Carleton Newman. The tithe, amounting to £398, is impropriated. The Primitive Methodist chapel was built in 1904 on a site given by Viscount Downe, at a cost of £350, and will seat 85 persons. Wykeham Abbey, the seat of Viscount Downe K.C.V.O., C.B., C.I.E. is a modern mansion of stone, enlarged and decorated in 1904: it occupies part of the site of the priory founded here about 1153, by Payne Fitz-Osbert de Wycham, for nuns of the Cistercian order, and dedicated to SS. Mary and Michael; at the dissolution there were nine nuns, and revenues estimated at £25; the house is situated in a park of 160 acres, 1 mile south from the high road. There are some scanty remains of the priory buildings. Capt. the Hon. John Dawnay D.S.O. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is gravel, clayey and limy; the subsoil is rock, round-head stone and limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The acreage is (including Ruston and Langdale End) 8,180 of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £4,063; the population in 1911 was 437.

Public Elementary school (mixed), for 120 children; average attendance, 59.
