Historical Description

The small market-town of Yarum, or Yarm, situated on the right bank of the river Tees, over which is a stone bridge, between the counties of York and Durham; the river is navigable five miles above Yarm.

This town is incorporated, and was formerly a much more flourishing place than it is at present; it, however, still carries on a pretty brisk trade, by water, in lead, corn, and butter, to London. The new bridge thrown over the river Wear, at Sunderland, has made Yarm a considerable thoroughfare from Newcastle, Shields, and Sunderland, by way of Castle Elder to Yarm, and from thence to Thirsk, &c.

The weekly market is held on Thursday; and there are five fairs on the days mentioned in our list.

The October fair is one of the most considerable in the north of England, and brings a great influx of money into the town, and adjacent country. The grounds in the parish being mostly laid down in grass, the fertility of the fields, with the thriving quickset fences and trees in the hedge-rows, give the country a rich appearance. In the church, which is a handsome and modern-built structure, there is a beautiful window of painted glass, by Peckitt, of York, above the altar: it was presented by William Chalinor, Esq. a native of this town.

The principal figure is a full length representation of Moses delivering the Law, from Mount Sinai.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

YARM, anciently a market town, is a parish and the head of a petty sessional division (held at Thornaby-on-Tees), and is 1 ½ miles from the Eaglescliffe junction and a quarter of a mile from the Yarm station on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland branch of the North Eastern railway, 4 miles south-South-west of Stockton, 14 north-north-east of Northallerton and 234 from London, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, west division of the Langbaurgh liberty, union of Stokesley, county court district of Stockton and Middlesbrough, rural deanery of Stokesley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The town, which is supplied with water by the Tees Valley Water Board and is lighted with gas, consists chiefly of one long and broad street running north and south, is nearly surrounded by the Tees and was very liable to inundations, one of which occurred on February 17, 1753; and again in 1771 and 1881 it suffered similar calamities, all of which did great damage, but the river below Yarm having since been dredged two feet deeper, the town is not likely to be again flooded; the river, which separates it from the county of Durham, is here crossed by a substantial stone bridge of five arches and is navigable for vessels drawing 8 feet of water and of 60 tons burden. On the 3rd of September, 1803, the foundation stone was laid for a cast iron bridge across the river, eventually completed at a cost of £8,000; but on the 12th of January, 1806, when on the point of being opened to the public, it collapsed, owing to some defect in the abutments. The original bridge, of which part remains, was built by Walter Skirlaw, Bishop of Durham, in 1400. Near the same spot, and running parallel with the length of the town on the western side, is the fine viaduct carrying the North Eastern railway, 780 yards in length, and consisting of 43 arches, constructed of red brick with stone dressings, erected at a cost of upwards of £80,000. The church of St. Mary Magdalene, a plain building of stone, standing a little to the west of the town, upon the banks of the Tees, was rebuilt in 1730, and restored in 1878 at a cost of £2,500; it consists of nave, aisles and an embattled western Norman tower, containing 3 bells: most of the windows are stained and there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1645.

The living is a rectory, net yearly value £196, with 2 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Arthur Garmondsway Waldy M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. The tithe, amounting to £220, is impropriated. The Catholic church, dedicated to St. Mary, was founded is 1795 and rebuilt in 1860 near the site of the Black Friars’ monastery, and contains a stained glass window erected to the memory of Thomas Meynell by his widow. There are also Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels; the latter was rebuilt in 1897, and now seats 250. The Young Men’s Christian Association has a branch here, and meetings are regularly held. A Cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1881, at a cost of £1,000 and was enlarged by the addition of 1 acre is 1912, and is now under the control of a joint committee. A fair is held annually on the 18th, 19th and 20th of October, which is well attended for the sale of horses, cattle and cheese. The market, owing to the proximity of the town to that of Stockton, has become extinct. The covered market-cross, built in 1710 and containing a clock and 2 bells, stands in the centre of the street; in the upper floor is a room where the steward of the manor holds a court leet, and all parish business is transacted. The charities have been given by various benefactors. Edgar Meynell esq. of Durham, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. Here was formerly a house of Dominican or Black Friars. founded by Peter de Brus, who died in 1240; a mansion, built on the site, and called the “Frierage,” and the property of the lord of the manor, is now occupied by Edward Robson Whitwell esq. D.L., J.P. The soil is of a clayey and loamy nature, and well adapted for crops of wheat, oats and beans. The area is 1,197 acres of land, 2 of water, 25 of tidal water, and 6 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,858; the population in 1911 was 1,617 in the civil and in the ecclesiastical parish.
