Historical Description

YEADON is a township and an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1845 out of Guiseley, situated on a hill to the north of Airedale, 3 miles south from Otley, 8 ½ north-by-west from Leeds, 2 from Apperley Bridge station on the Midland railway, 3 from Horsforth and 1 ½ from Guiseley stations on the North Eastern railway: it is a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, in the upper division of Skyrack wapentake, Otley county court district, union of Wharfedale, Otley rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese. The township is governed by a Local Board of nine members. The church of St. John is a stone building in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel and nave, with square tower surmounted by pinnacles, and containing a clock and 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the rector of Guiseley, and held by the Rev. Nassau Clark M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. There are chapels for Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and Methodist Free Church. The cemetery was opened in 1875, and has an area of 6 acres. Woollen manufacturing is extensively carried on here. The Town Hall and Mechanics’ Institute, just completed, is a handsome and substantial stone building in the Gothic style, erected at a cost of £8,000, and contains a fine Public Hall capable of holding some 1,200 persons: on the same floor are the rooms of the Liberal Club and the Local Board; and on the ground floor are a number of class and lecture rooms, offices and hall keeper's apartments; the staircases are adorned by stained windows, presented to the people of Yeadon by J. M. Barwick and Alfred Brayshaw esqrs. the one representing the shearing of sheep and the other an Assyrian at work at his loom; the tower has an illuminated clock, presented by Joseph Peate esq. and a handsome grand pianoforte, the gift of Miss Bolton, has been placed in the public hall. William Hill esq. of Leeds, was the architect. The Yeadon and Guiseley Gas Light Company was established in 1844, and the town and factories are well supplied with gas. Col. W. H. Crompton-Stansfield J.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is various find rich; the subsoil is gravel and rock. The chief crops are grass and corn. The area is, of the ecclesiastical parish 1,692 acres; of the township 1,723 acres; rateable value, £16,981; population in 1871, 5,246.
