Ab'-ner, father of light, son of the father. The son of Ner, uncle of king Saul, and general of his army. After Saul s death, he made Ishbosheth king, and for seven years supported the family of Saul, in opposition to David. In consequence of a quarrel between him and Ishbosheth, Abner went over to David, and his influence in the army produced a general submission to David, which cost him his life, for he soon fell by the hand of Joab. 1 Sam. xiv. 50.
