From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Greek ’Aχιλλεύς. The etymology of the name is obscure and doubtful (it is possibly allied to the name of the river ’Aχέλωος). This Homeric hero, unlike his rival Hector, was never a favourite in the Middle Ages and his name never came into general use. But there was a 3rd-C St Achilleus, the apostle of Vienne, and consequently Achille has been not uncommon in the south of France where it is still used. The revival of classical names at the Renaissance led to an occasional use of Achilles by German princes, and it has been used very occasionally in England.
