Ada is probably a hypocoristic form of some name in Adal, but there was an Old German m. and f. name Eda, Æda, Etta, Ætte, cognate with Old English Eadda, Eadu (see Eden). The Hebrew Adah (an ornament) has been used occasionally since the 17th C, especially in America, and it may sometimes have been confused with Ada. Ada is also sometimes a pet-name for Adelaide q.v.
This f. name is obscure in origin, for whereas Charlotte Yonge derives it from a Teutonic word meaning ‘happy’, Helena Swan declares that, literally, it signifies ‘rich gift’ and is ‘an early English contraction of Edith’: both, however, are agreed that it is distinct from Adah.
According to some this name has been corrupted from Adama, feminine of Adam. Others derive it from the name Ead (found Eade), which is from the Anglo Saxon ead, happy; or from the name Eadith. Littleton gives ‘Eada’ (Sax. ), Auda, Ada, al. Idonea, which translates ‘fit, meet, proper;’ also ‘pious, honest, rich.’
