A female name. another derivative of Old German athal, ‘noble’, introduced into England by the Norman Conquest. It was common in the Middle Ages in the forms Adelin, Edelin (cf. surnames Adlin, Edlin). A sub-tenant in Domesday Book is Adelina joculatrix. Lyford, 1655, gives Adelia as a f. christian name, but it must have been very uncommon at that date. Adeline, like Adelaide and Adela, came back into favour in the 1 9th C. See also Aline.
