A male name. the name of the Trojan hero was occasionally used in Italy and elsewhere after the Renaissance (e.g. Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini (b. 1405), Pope Pius II). But its chief use has been in Ireland and Scotland to translate the Celtic Aonghus or Angus q.v. (cf. the similar use of Terence, Cornelius, Penelope, &c.). The Clan Macdonell, for instance, have used Aonghus since at least the 15th C, and the Glengarry branch still use it and spell it Aeneas.
Properly ÆNEAS. Now rare in England and almost obsolescent in the U. S. A., it was ‘adopted in Scotland under the impression that it was a variant of Angus’, Swan. ‘Pious Æneas,’ as Virgil calls him, ‘owes his modern fame’ to that poet, who takes it from Homer. A Greek name, it ‘probably comes from αινέω (aineo), (I) praise’, Yonge. For its ending, cf. Phineas.
Meaning: to praise.
A Greek name, meaning: Laudable.
