Agatha was the name of the mother of Edgar Atheling, a d. of the Emperor Henry II, and also of one of the dd. of William the Conqueror. The medieval French form of the name was Agace, and Agacia is usual in Latin records of the 13th C. Promptorium Parvulorum (c. 1440) and English Register of Godstow Nunnery, c. 1450 (E.E.T.S. 129-30) (1450) give Agase and Agas respectively s the English for Agatha, and C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) gives several examples to illustrate the surnames Agasson, Agace, Aggas. It appears as Agathie in 1652. It is often abbreviated to Aggie.
