From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A male name. Old German Alaricus, compound of ala ‘all’ and ricja ‘rule’; the name of several kings of the West Goths, notably Alaric I who sacked Rome in a.d. 410. Occasionally used as a christian name since the beginning of the 19th C.
M. A contraction of the long obsolete Athalaric, which, via the A. -S. Æthelric, derives from the Teutonic for ‘noble king’. Popular in C19 but now held to be ‘literary’ if not, indeed, affected. Those pacifist fathers who christen thus their sons might remember that the most distinguished Alaric of all is that King of the Western Goths who, in 410 A. D., sacked Rome as ruthlessly as thoroughly. ‘Tis a fighting word. (See also Ulric.)
From the old Gothic name Alareiks, from all-reich, very powerful, prœpotens: Wachter.
Teutonic (masculine) - Noble ruler.
A Gothic name, meaning: All ruler.
