A male name. Old German Adalhard, compound of athal ‘noble’ and hardu ‘hard’. Adalhard was the name of a 9th-C saint, cousin to Charlemagne. The equivalent Old English Æthelheard was also the name of a saint, an Archbishop of Canterbury (d. 805), and Alard may represent a survival of this as well as of the German name which was introduced into England by the Normans and continued in use until the 16th C.
