A female name. Old German Alveral, Alvered, Alberad, Albrad, compound of alfi ‘elf', radi 'counsel’, the equivalent of Old English Ælfred, was used both as a m. and as a f. name, and it was the f. use which seems to have survived in the name which appears in medieval records as Albreda. It was no doubt introduced into England by the Normans, and in the vernacular became Aubrey. C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) gives an example of Albray, and Albreda is common m 12th- and 13th- C Latin records. The use of the name (for women, but see Aubrey) seems to have come to an end before the 15th C.
