The spelling has always been liable to variation; thus Jane Austen writes the name of her friend sometimes as Alethea and sometimes as Alithea Bigge, and the name is also sometimes spelt Aletheia. Alethea is sometimes confused with Althea (wholesome), the name of the mother of Meleager, which was used by Lovelace in his well-known poem ‘To Althea from Prison’.
