A female name. the later form of two Old English women’s names, Æthelflæd, compound of æthel ‘noble’ and flæd ‘beautiful’, ‘clean’; and Ælflæd, compound of ælf ‘elf’ and flæd. The first was the name of the most able of the dd. of Alfred, ‘The Lady of the Mercians’ (d. 918), and the second of a famous abbess of Whitby (654-714?). Neither name long survived the Norman Conquest, but Elfleda was revived in the 19th C. Ælfled, Ælfleda, Alfled, Alfleda, Alflet, Elflet Domesday Book 1086.
