From a Teutonic word meaning ‘elf-council’, hence a ‘crafty counsellor’, which is the motto on King Alfred’s Jewel preserved at Cambridge. (While elf is cognate with Latin albus, white, elves being white sprites, red is the rede of archaic English.) It was the fame of King Alfred which popularised the name in England: though it is to be noted that after the Anglo-Saxon period it virtually lapsed until the 18th century, when it experienced a remarkable recrudescence. A derivative is the obsolete Alured, from Aluredus the Latinized form (? from misreading of Alvred, a variant) of Aelfred, the A. -S. form of Alfred.
This name is usually translated ‘all peace,’ Meidinger derives the first syllable of the Anglo-Saxon names Alfred, Aelfred, from the word alp, alf, elf, strong, powerful. The name is rather from alf-rad, help in counsel.
