A female name. this is apparently the Latin adj amabilis, ‘lovable’. It appears in Latin as Amabilis, Amabilia, Amabilla, and in the vernacular as Amabel, Amable, Amiable from the 12th C onwards. An early example was one of the three coheiresses of William Earl of Gloucester (d. 1183). Amabel was later shortened to Mabel q.v., and was gradually superseded by it. It seldom appears between the 14th and the 19th C whin it was revived, with other medieval names, by the writers of romances; but in the 12th and 13th C it was a very common name.
