A male name. (I. Ambrosius, French Ambroise, Italian Ambrogio); Greek άμβρόσιος, ‘pertaining to the immortals’. It became popular in the West as the name of St Ambrose the 4th-C Bishop of Milan. It occurs twice in Domesday Book and from time to time in the 12th and 13th C, and is given in Promptorium Parvulorum 1440 as an English name. In 1604 it occurs in a list of Yorkshire recusants, and it has been in regular though infrequent use during the last three centuries. The fairly common Welsh name Emrys is said to be a Welsh form of Ambrosius, and to go back to Ambrosius Aurelianus, the semi-historical 5th-C prototype of King Arthur.
