Amisius is also found, and Amis was certainly a m. name in French (e.g. the romance of Amis and Amiloun). There was a St Amicia whose relics were highly venerated in the Cathedral of St Pol-de-Léon. The origin of the name is obscure, and it is often confusedwith Amy (Latin Amata) q.v. C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) gives two entries from a Lincs record of 1273 which come close together and almost certainly refer to the same person: William fil. Amye and William fil. Amice. The latest example he gives of the name is Ameis Austen d. 1540. The surnames Ames, Amies, Amis, Amiss, Aymes, Amison, &c., probably derive from Amice rather than from Amy, which was much less common in the surname period.
Amicia Curia Regis Rolls 1187-1215, Feudal Aids 1346, Hundred Rolls 1273. Amis Testa de Neville, or Book of Fees, temp. Hen. III-Edw. I 13th C.
Occasionally AMECIA or AMICIA. Now rare variants of Amy.
