Anastasius, common in the Greek Church, was seldom used in the West, but Anastasia, the name of a 4th-C martyr mentioned in the Canon of the Mass, became a general favourite, and in medieval legend was attached to the Virgin’s midwife. It is found in England from the 13th C, and C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) gives 16th- and 17th-C examples of Anstey, Anstice, Anstes, Anstis, Anstiss all as christian names. Lyford 1655 gives the name as Anastase, and in the 18th C it regained its full stature and became Anastatia. It has been a particular favourite in Ireland, where it was used, amongst others, to translate the native Aine q.v.

This, with its now, except in Ireland, equally rather disused male, Anastasius, is one of the two notable names based on the idea of immortality: the other is Ambrose; cf. the less permanent Amarantha. Cognate with Greek Αθανασίος (Athanasios), the Undying, itself from θάνατος (thanatos), death. ‘A name of good hope for a Christian,... it became dear to the Church at large, through the great Alexandrian patriarch, the bulwark of the faith,’ Charlotte Yonge, who adds: ‘So again the new Christians took the old word θάνάστασις (... an awakening or rising)...; then formed from it Αναστάσιος (Anastasios)... having the elements of the Resurrection within him or her, for the feminine Anastasia was as early and as frequent as the masculine. ‘
