A female name. the use of this name is comparatively modern and infrequent, though Andrée has long been a common name in France. It is simply a f. form of Andrew (Latin Andreas). Andrea occurs occasionally in medieval Latin records, but probably represents the ordinary m. name Andrew applied to a girl, i.e. the person in question was called Andrew in the vernacular and only acquired the distinctively f. ending when her name was turned into Latin.
