A female name. Greek compound of άντι ‘contrary', ‘against’, γόνος ‘born’, the name of the heroic d. of Oedipus. The name occurs in a Curia Regis Roll of 1219 as Antigonia and Humphrey Duke of Gloucester (1391-1447) had an illegitimate d. named Antigone. Ismene, the name of the sister of Antigone, is also found at about the same date. The story of Oedipus and his children was probably familiar from the tragedies of Seneca.
