A female name. Greek ’Απολλωνία, ‘pertaining to Apollo’: this was the usual English form of the name of St Apollonia, a 3rd-C Alexandrian martyr who was said to have been tortured by having her teeth broken and hence was invoked against the toothache. It appears as Appolonia in Shropshire in 1787 and as Abbelina in New England in 1827. An old lady of 85 named Appolina died in 1938.
