The name Arran or Aran originated from the Caucasus Mountains and was brought to other areas with human migrations across Europe and elsewhere. It was once an old name for Azerbaijan, and it was used by Celtic tribes to name a Scottish island: The Isle of Arran. A variant can be found in the Irish chain of islands called the Aran Isles. It means 'ridge containing iron ore', which was important knowledge for the Iron Age peoples who lived in these different regions.
