Archibald Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old German Ercanbald, compound of ercan ‘genuine’, ‘simple’ and bald ‘bold’. Like other names in ercan (see E. Förstemann, Altdeutsches Namenbuch) It developed A- forms which were influenced by the supposed analogy with Greek names in Archi- (cf. Theodoric), and such forms as Archembald, Archimbalt appear at an early date. The name was brought to England at the Norman Conquest and appears in Domesday Book as Arcebaldus, Arcenbaldus, Erchenbaldus, while later versions are Erkenbaud, Erchebald, Herchembaut. There was a corresponding Old English name Eorconbeald in use in the East Anglian royal family, many of whose members bore names compounded with eorcan, and some of the post-Conquest examples may represent a survival of it. St Eorkonweald (d. 693) is sometimes at a later date referred to as St Archibald. Archibald survived in occasional use in England, especially in the North, and gave rise to the surnames Archbell, Archbold. But it was only in Scotland that it took permanent root and became really common. It has always been a particular favourite with the Campbells and Douglases. The usual abbreviation is Archie. Like Algernon q.v. it is taken by comic writers as a typical aristocratic name.

Arcebaldus, Arcenbaldus, Erchenbaldus Domesday Book 1086. Erkenbaud Curia Regis Rolls 1201-3. Erchebaldus Feudal Aids 1303. Archebald or Erchenbald Lyford 1655.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

From the Teutonic (‘holy prince’), its earliest form being Erchanbald, which may have been suggested by Eorconwald, the name of that Bishop of London (ca. 678) who was canonized. As Æneas for Angus, so, among the Scots, Archibald was adopted as the Lowland equivalent of the Gillespie of the houses of Campbell and Douglas. In the present century, it is apt to be used derisively: a deterioration both indicated and hastened by the catch-phrase, ‘Archibald! Certainly not!’

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

From the Old German name Erchenbald, Erchanpald; from erchan-bald, bold in work or activity. Meidinger translates erchan, ‘wirken, wirksam, thätig.’ Nickname, Archie.

Prænomina (1882) by Richard Stephen Charnock

Teutonic (masculine) - Chief of the brave.

What is Your Name? (1863) by Sophy Moody

A Teutonic name, meaning: Princely chieftain: very bold: bold archer.

Dictionary of Given Names with Origins and Meanings (1934) by Flora Haines Loughead

A Gaelic name: Gilleasbuig, Bishop’s gille, Middle Gaelic Gillespik, Gilla-espic (1467 MS.). Hence Gillespie. The name Archibald, Anglo-Saxon Arcebald, Arcenbald or Ercenbald, which vaguely means “right-bold” (0. H. Gaelic erchen, right, real), has no apparent connection with Gillespic in meaning or origin (cf. similarly Ludovic and Maoldomhnuich).
