Aretas IV is mentioned in 2 Cor XI. 32, being King at Damascus at the time of St Paul’s escape from there. The name was made use of in the 17th C, like many names occurring in the Bible, without much regard to its associations. The d. of Aretas Seton, Governor of the Leeward Islands, married at the beginning of the 18th C Edmund Akers, ancestor of the present Lord Chilston, and from that time the name has been in regular use in the Akers (now Akers-Douglas) family.
