A female name. Greek ’Αρτεμισία, ‘belonging to Artemis’; the name of a queen of Caria in the 4th C B.C., who built the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. The name has been in use since the middle of the 18th C in the family of Philipps of Picton, and has been carried by marriage into other families. A writer to Notes and Queries (15.12.1934) states that there are a number of instances of its use in the neighbourhood of Lewisham, Greenwich, and Bermondsey.
