Augustus Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Latin augustus, ‘venerable’, ‘consecrated’. Augustus was adopted as a second name by some of the German princes after the Renaissance in imitation of the Roman emperors, and it soon became an ordinary christian name among them.It was introduced into England by the Hanoverians and was popular in the 19th C. It was often shortened to Gus or Gussy in familiar use. August is common in German and Auguste in French.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Though now, in the British Empire, held somewhat pompous, it is an imperial name of considerable sonority: it appears pretentious only when it is set in juxta-position to Bill and Jack and Tom. This was the agnomen conferred on Caius Julius Caesar Octavianus,—who (63 B. C. -14 A. D.) was the nephew of Julius Caesar and the first Roman emperor (27 B. C.—14 A. D.),—by a Senate anxious to avoid offending the citizens with rex. Its etymology is problematic, but probably it derives from Latin augere (‘to increase’) or from the Teutonic œge, awe: Augustus may be interpreted as ‘hedged with majesty’. (Harvey; Yonge.)
