From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A female name. this name seems to have been introduced into England by the Normans. It may be from Old German Aveza, a derivative of Avi (a common element in personal names) which is recorded by E. Förstemann, Altdeutsches Namenbuch. It was fairly common from the 12th to 14th C, and is found occasionally in the 16th to 18th C. C. W. Bardsley, Dictionary of English and WelshSurnames (pub. 1901) speaks of it as just coming into fashion again after two centuries of neglect, but a writer in Notes and Queries at about the same time (1872) says: 'Avise, if it is the same as Avis, is certainly not obsolete, for I have known more than one.’ The surnames Aves, Avis, Avison are derived from it.

Avicia Curia Regis Rolls 1196-1219. Avice Hundred Rolls 1273, Columb Major 1600. Avis Stepney Register 1590. Avice Lyford 1635. Aveis Binsey Church 1711.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Occasionally AVICIA; erroneously, by confusion with the next entry, AVIS. At one time a very common f. name, it began in England as Havoise or Hawoise, a transformation of French Hedvige, from German Hedwig (earlier Haduvig or Haduwig), ‘war-refuge’; Helena Swan proposes an alternative origin, a Teutonic word meaning ‘lady of defence’, but this has less historical justification.

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

A Teutonic name, meaning: Refuge in war.
