Baldwyn Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old German Baldavin, compound of balda ‘bold’ and vini ‘friend’, and the cognate Old English Bealdwine are joint sources of this name. In Domesday Book there is mention of actual tenants of this name and also of tenants Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor). Baldwin was a particular favourite in Flanders, and it was probably Flemish influence which was responsible for the popularity of the name in England in the 12th and 13th C. The surnames Baldwin, Bawden, Boden, Bowden (the last three from French Baudoin), and Bodkin (from the diminutive Baudkin) are from it. Though less common in later centuries, it has never been altogether disused.
