From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Old French baptiste, Latin baptista from Greek βαπτιστής, ‘one who baptizes'. This name, which is much used in Roman Catholic countries, usually with John (e.g. French Jean Baptiste, Italian Giambattista) but also by itself and as a f. as well as a m. name (e.g. Italian Baptista), is uncommon in England, and seems not to have been used earlier than the Reformation; examples are Baptist Hicks, 1st Viscount Campden (1551-1629) and Baptist Wriothesley Noel (1798-1873). The f. form Baptista sometimes occurs in the 17th C, eg. Baptista Jones who is recorded in 1619.
