A male name. Hebrew ‘son of exhortation or consolation’, the name of the disciple and companion of St Paul, whose career is recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. It is found in use as a christian name in England from about 1200. The English form of the name, Barnabe or Barnaby, survived in use until the early 19th C (e.g. Dickens’s Barnaby Rudge), but seems now to be obsolete.
