Bartholomew Forename Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A male name. Hebrew ‘son of Talmai’ (‘abounding in furrows’); the patronymic of the Apostle Nathanael (q.v.), by which he is commonly known. It is not found in use in England before the Conquest, but it was very common from the 12th C onwards. The cult of St Bartholomew was popular (there are 165 church dedications to him in England) and his relics were widely diffused. Bartholomew, with its diminutives Bartle, Bartlet and Bat, gave rise to a number of surnames such as Bartholomew, Bartle, Bartlet, Bartlett, Bate, Bates, Bateson, Bateman, Batcock, Batkin, Batt, Batts, Batson, Batty; Tolly is also probably from it.

The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names (1947) by E. G. Withycombe

Hebrew, ‘son of furrows’, so presumably the name was given first to a ploughman. Its religious associations are that Bartholomew was ‘one of the Twelve (Apostles) , by many thought to be Nathanael, the “Israelite without guile” of St. John’s Gospel’ (Benedictines); there was in C11 Italy a notable abbot so named; and in C12 England a monk ‘missioning’ to Norway.

Name This Child (1959) by Eric Partridge

From the Greek name βαρθολομαιος, from the Hebrew בר חמי Bartolomai, which according to some means ‘son of Ptolemy,’ but it translates rather ‘son (רב) of Tolmai;’ perhaps another spelling of Talmai, father-in-law of David. The nickname is Bat.

Prænomina (1882) by Richard Stephen Charnock

Hebrew (masculine) - Son that suspends the waters.

What is Your Name? (1863) by Sophy Moody

Bar-thol'-o-mew, a son that suspends the waters. One of the twelve apostles, and thought to be the same person who is called Nathanael, one of the first disciples of Christ Matt x. 3.

Meaning: son of Talmai.

A Dictionary of the Proper Names of the Old and New Testament (1909) by James Beaumont Jackson

A Hebrew name, meaning: Son of furrows: husbandman or farmer: son of Tolmai: warlike son.

Dictionary of Given Names with Origins and Meanings (1934) by Flora Haines Loughead

A Gaelic name: Parian, Irish Parthalon, Early Irish Partholón, Latin Partholomœus or Bartholomœus (Nennius, ninth cent.), the name of a personage who is represented as the first invader of Ireland after the Flood (278 years after!). The p proves the name to be non-Gadelic; and as the historians take Partholon from Spain, the Spanish Bar Tolemon of legend has been suggested as the original. Prof. Rhys thought it came from the Ivernians or Pre-Celtic race in Ireland. Hence the Clan Mac-farlane, Gaelic M‘Pharlain.
