Basilie Forename Definition:
A female name. f. of Greek βασίλειος ‘kingly'. Now obsolete, but very common in England and France in the 12th and 13th C. It may be a f. form of the name Basil, formed at a comparatively late date, or may have been taken from the name of an early Saint Basilla; but as Basil was at no time a common name in the West, and as St Basilla was a very obscure saint whose cult was never of any great importance, the popularity of Basilia remains something of a mystery.

Basilie Forename Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
The English form of the name was probably Basil, though the French form Basilie sometimes occurs (cf. Denis, Denise). Basilia occurs only in Latin documents. The surnames Bassil, Bassill, Bazell, Basley, Basely, Bazley, and possibly Beasley and Beazley, are derived from it and testify to its former popularity.
