From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
A female name. (French Béatrix, Italian Beatrice, Bice, Spanish Beatriz); Latin ‘bringer of joy’, the name of a 4th-C Roman saint. It occurs as the name of a sub-tenant in Domesday Book, and was fairly common from the 12th to 13th C. The two forms of the name are relics of the old French cas-sujet Béatrix, and cas- régime Béatriz; both occur in England, but the second was the commoner; in 1487 it appears as Beautrice, a little later as Betteresse and in 1604 as Bettris. Bettrys is still the Welsh form. The diminutives Beatty, Beton were common in the Middle Ages and gave rise to various surnames. Beaten occurs in Cornwall as late as the 17th C. The name went quite out of fashion in the 17th and 18th C, and its revival in the later part of the 19th C was probably due to its many literary associations—Dante’s Beatrice Portinari, Shakespeare’s Beatrice in Much Ado about Nothing, and Thackeray’s Beatrix Esmond. The name is not now generally abbreviated; when it is, it is usually to Bee or Trix, Trixie; occasionally, in the Italian mode, to Bice. It is interesting to note that the vulgar modern pronunciation of the name as a disyllable, and abbreviation of it to Beat, closely correspond to the medieval vernacular pronunciation.
