Probably as a rule simply a f. form of Benedictus, the man’s name, though there are one or two obscure saints Benedicta. It is found in England from the beginning of the 13th C. In Latin documents it appears as Benedicta but in English ones it is the same as the m. name, i.e. Bennet. Lyford 1655 gives Benet or Benedicta, and Bennitt is found as a woman’s name as late as 1690. The Latin form of the name was revived at the end of the 19th C, and lately the Spanish Benita has been introduced by way of America.
